After making more than 50 ceramic cubes you’d think I would’ve gotten over my fixation. But no! My attention was pulled by that magnet, The Kingdom of Squares – The iconic “Periodic Table of the Elements”. All that lovely Order built from that symbol for The Earth – The Square. But it struck me, that if this Table is a model of all that is, both in and out of this world, a depiction of the building blocks of all the known universe, and all that we are made of, then surely something vital is missing. Where is Chaos - The scribble unpredictable? Where is the Jackal hiding?

And this thought led to imagining  personalities inside the chemical squares, and how much fun it would be to name them, discover and draw out their characters, bringing them out of their box and into wonderful messy life.

There are 118 Elements and I have made a start on what will be a series of 118 drawing-poems depicting each of these “Characters of the Elements”.

Cobalt Gobblin'

Cobalt Gobblin' had a dream, a doomsday dream,

erupting from the mine of his deepest, darkest, night-time self.

And he clutched this fright close to his Gobblin' chest

and dreamt of locking this possible, in the safest bone-rock

of the never to be, guarded by the Dr Strangelove, black comedy.

And in this dark dream, the beautiful blue, the precious blue,

Blue Planet, was shorn in shards.

Torn in shards by the worst aspect of his night-time self,

and nothing more existed,

not even the sky blue, not even weeping.

And so he clutched the precious blue, his precious blue,

close and closer to his Gobblin' chest,

and crept and crept,

and prayed he could keep his worst aspect safe,

from leaking.
